Standardized Student Dress Code
2017-2018

Vision:  To Create a Premier District

GENERAL – No clothing, make-up, jewelry, accessories, or paraphernalia will be allowed that contains pictures, emblems or writing that:

  • Are lewd, vulgar, slanderous, offensive, incite disruptive behavior or depict violence.
  • Advertise or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, guns, gambling, drugs or any other substance prohibited under legal requirements.
  • Refer to satanic, cult, gang, or drug behavior.
  • All items of clothing (including undergarments) must be worn appropriately.

Shirts, Blouses, Turtlenecks:

  • Styles allowed: Collared knit button-up polo style shirt or dress style buttoned shirts/blouses (long or short sleeve), or turtlenecks.  Girls with cleavage showing will be asked to put on a school provided shirt so they can continue in class and learn. Shirts that support in emblem or word MISD
  • Shirts, blouses or turtlenecks may be untucked if appropriate size.  If body is showing when arms are raised, the shirt must be tucked.  Shirts that are tucked must be tucked in so that belts show.
  • Shirts/blouses must be buttoned from the first button past the collar.
  • Brads, studs, zippers, or other adornments are not permitted.

Slacks, Pants, Shorts:

  • Styles allowed: Slacks, pants, shorts, and denim jeans (cotton or denim).  Cargo and carpenter pant styles are allowed in grades PK-12Pants must be fitting and are never to sag.
  • No visible skin with any slack/jean above the knee.
  • Capris are acceptable.
  • Knee length walking shorts are acceptable.
  • Overalls, painter, hip-hugger, low-rise, or oversized style clothing is not permitted.
  • Baggy legged slacks or bell-bottom pants wider than shoes are not permitted.
  • Brads, studs, zippers, or other adornments are not permitted.
  • Not permitted: Yoga pants, leggings, tights made of spandex or knit material with or without pockets or belt loops as primary apparel

Skirts, Jumpers and Dresses for Female Students:

  • Styles allowed: Traditional styles knee-length or longer.
  • Excessively tight skirts and dresses are not permitted.
  • Kick-pleats or slits are permitted, but no more than 2 inches above the top of the knees.

Vests, Sweaters, Sweatshirts and Jackets:

  • Vests, sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, and jackets must be appropriately sized in the shoulders, sleeves, and length.

Footwear:

  • Flip flops, slides, sandals, jandals, and house shoes without a strap around the back to fasten are not permitted.
  • PK-5: Heels must not be greater than 1 ½ inches in height.
  • Shoes must match each other and be appropriately fastened.

Outerwear/Other Guidelines:

  • Approved maternity tops and bottoms must be worn by pregnant students once the pregnancy is confirmed and noticeable.  Tops and bottoms must comply with dress code colors and styles.
  • Caps, hats, hoods, bandanas or head coverings are not permitted inside the buildings.
  • Clothing items may not be worn in any way that reflect gang affiliation, conceals contraband, or creates a distraction.
  • See-through, provocative, or excessively tight clothing, i.e. spandex tights, shorts or pants and excessively tight skirts are not permitted.
  • Boys may not wear earrings whether covered or uncovered.  Girls may wear earrings in ears only.
  • Nose rings, eyebrow rings, lip rings, tongue rings, gauges or earrings worn on other visible parts of the body are prohibited whether covered or uncovered for all students.

Facial Hair:

  • Face must be clean-shaven using a razor or clipper-shaved if the student has skin that has been determined to be razor sensitive by a medical professional.
  • Beards, goatees, or mustaches are not permitted.
  • Sideburns are not to extend below the bottom of the earlobe.

Hair:

  • Boy’s hair should be no longer than the bottom of the collar.
  • Hair, at no time, should be in the student’s eyes.
  • Hair shall be a natural hair color.
  • Symbols, words, or slogans cut into the hair are not permitted.  Designs are not permitted.

Other Items:

  • Tattoos must be covered at all times including athletic events.
  • Excessive or distracting makeup/hair color/conspicuous fads are not permitted.
  • Symbols on clothing or jewelry that would distract or cause undue attention are not to be worn.
  • Dark glasses (unless prescribed by a physician) or “wild eyes” contacts are not permitted.
  • No school issued athletic apparel of any kind may be worn except in physical education and athletics.
  • Students must wear appropriate undergarments.
  • Mexia ISD discourages the wearing of expensive jewelry and other apparel and is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • School sponsored trips and award ceremonies: Principal’s discretion.  If the trip is to a place of high importance or distinction, students may be asked to wear red, black, or white shirts with khaki or black pants.

Final Authority:

  • Students must comply with District standards for grooming and accessories as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Final decisions on the appropriateness of school dress rest with the campus administration.

Consequences:

We want your child in class, respectful and ready to learn so they have a successful day of education.  If the campus administration determines that a student’s grooming violates the dress code, the student shall be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school.  The school will provide a shirt for cover up if available.  If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day or until the problem is corrected and/or may be sent home.  Consequences will be assigned based on the Student Code of Conduct.

New Students to MISD:

  • Students new to the district have five (5) days to comply with the policy.

DAEP Dress Code:

  • If your student is assigned to DAEP, he or she must wear the following during the duration of his/her assignment: khaki, black pants or jeans, white button up or polo, no designs on anything.
  • Shirts/blouses must be tucked in at all times with a belt on.  Closed toe shoes must be worn.
  • The student’s condition of cleanliness and personal hygiene shall be such that it does not offend others.
