2020-2021 Return to Learn Plan

The health and safety of our students and staff are the number one priority at Mexia High School. In light of our current world health crisis, we continually review and necessarily revise current practices and processes to ensure the safety of all stakeholders. The faculty and staff will model appropriate practices at the start of school to create safe practices for all.

Entrance

  • School doors will open at 7:00 AM.
  • Visitors will not be allowed into the building without an educational purpose and approval from a campus administrator.
  • ALL visitors will be screened and required to wear a mask prior to entering.
  • ALL staff and students will have temperature checked upon arrival each day prior to their entering the building. Temperature will be taken by a non-contact infrared thermometer
  • Students will arrive and report directly to their first period class. They will not be allowed to congregate in any area where social distancing is supervised.
  • Students and staff will be required to wear a mask in the building.
  • Students will be assigned to designated entrances of the building to provide the shortest distance to their first period class.
  • Breakfast will be served in all first period classes.
  • The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) considers a person to have a fever when he or she has measured temperature of 100.4℉ (38℃). Anyone whose temperature is this reading or above will be sent home. Parents/Guardians will be contacted immediately to schedule picking up the student as soon as possible.
  • All students will be required to leave the building by 3:45 PM unless they are directly supervised by a staff member.

Cafeteria

  • Sanitation methods which are recommended by the CDC will be followed by all staff members.
  • Cleaning/Sanitation will be completed after each seating.
  • Social distancing will be followed for student lines and lunchroom seating.
  • Each table will be limited to two students per table. Spacing will be marked on tables to identify areas for seating.
  • Most students will eat their meals in their first period classes (breakfast) and in their fifth period classes (lunch). Use of the cafeteria will be limited to four or less classes at a time (70 students). Classes eating lunch in the cafeteria will be rotated on a weekly basis.
  • Students are welcome to bring their own lunch to school. However, no outside meals will be allowed to be delivered during the school day.
  • For remote learning students lunches will be served from the South Side of McBay Elementary School. Parents will need to contact the school each day to allow the Food & Nutrition Services enough time to plan for the appropriate number of meals. These times will be released in the coming days. Please note that a student must be enrolled in MISD to receive a meal.
  • Food distribution- All cafeteria staff will utilize PPE while serving food. Student movement through the lines will be directed by MHS staff members to maintain proper distancing at all times.

Gym/Athletics

  • The UIL will be providing guidelines for the extracurricular activities in the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Physical Education students will not dress out. Class activities will be planned accordingly. Use of outdoor space will be encouraged when weather conditions permit.
  • Showers- students using athletic showers will be required to maintain social distance as they shower and dress. Coaches will establish groups for students (maximum of 10) to rotate in and out locker rooms.
  • Sanitation methods which are recommended by the CDC for cleaning areas will be followed by all staff members.
  • ALL staff will practice recommended CDC protocols while students are in their care.
  • Cleaning and sanitation will be completed after each activity. Athletic practice attire will be washed daily.
  • Athletes will be responsible for bringing their own drinking water. No common drinking stations will be available.

Classrooms

  • Sanitation methods will be in compliance with CDC protocols for cleaning areas. All staff members will follow these guidelines.
  • Cleaning/Sanitation will be completed throughout the day.
  • No sharing of supplies- students will have their own materials. The teachers will work with students to get what supplies they need if they do not have supplies.
  • Disinfectant spray will be used frequently throughout the day.
  • Teachers will maximize the square footage of their rooms to space students at a safe distance from others.
  • If students are seated at an appropriate social distance from others in the room, they may remove their mask at their desk. However, the mask must be worn as students move away from their work space or someone enters their work space.
  • Students will be encouraged to use sanitation wipes on areas of their possible contact as they enter the classroom.

Hallways/Restrooms

  • Sanitation methods will be in compliance with CDC protocols for cleaning areas. All staff members will follow these guidelines.
  • Disinfectant spray will be used frequently throughout the day.
  • Staff will work together to efficiently transition the students between class periods. This will include a staggered release from classes during a five minute passing period.
  • Hallway lockers will not be assigned to students. Each locker will be sealed.
  • Student paths will be marked to provide appropriate spacing as well as directional indication for students and staff to follow.
  • Staff members will work with students on safety measures during restroom breaks. A minimal number of students will be allowed into restrooms at one time. Spacing will be maintained as handwashing occurs. The custodial staff will clean restrooms multiple times throughout the day.

Water Fountains

  • Closed
  • Students will be allowed to bring water bottles or clear plastic containers for water. Containers should be labeled with the student’s name. Only water is allowed in the classrooms with the exception of breakfast and lunch periods. If more water is needed, a staff member will be of assistance.

Band Hall

  • During band, students will be appropriately spaced during the class period.
  • The bells of brass instruments will have a protective covering when in use.
  • Sanitation methods will be practiced before students enter the band hall and following class.
  • When students transition to and from practice areas, they will maintain an appropriate social distance.

Library

  • The MHS Library will remain open with a minimal number in the space at one time.
  • Open times will be in the morning and afternoon.
  • Teachers will schedule times to take their classes into the Library.
  • Area will be sprayed with sanitation frequently throughout the day.
  • Returned books will be sanitized and stored for a minimum of two days before being accessible for future use. These books will be labeled to indicate their safe reuse date.

Computer Labs

  • Sanitation methods which are recommended by the CDC will be followed by staff members.
  • Desktop computers will be sanitized after each use.
  • All MHS students will be issued a chromebook for their individual use. Students will be provided disinfectant wipes to clean their issued devices daily.

Buses/Transportation

  • Students will adhere to social distancing on the bus. Therefore, only one student per seat unless the two students are in the same immediate family.
  • Buses will be run without air conditioning in order to maximize air flow from open windows.
  • Buses will be cleaned and sanitized at the end of each day by staff.
  • Staff utilizing district vehicles will follow CDC protocols and vehicles will be sanitized upon return by staff.

COVID Quarantine Room

  • If a student or staff member is experiencing any of the COVID-19 symptoms, they will be placed in a designated room away from the rest of the school population until their parent/guardian can pick them up.
  • Students in this room will be supervised by a staff member at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.

Designated Staff Only Areas

  • The Staff Break Room will have limited seating to ensure social distancing.
  • Coffee makers, utensils, and ice machines will not be shared between staff.
  • Copiers are to be wiped down with supplied disinfectant wipes prior to each use.
  • Staff members will no longer be able to share food items such as birthday cakes, cookies, donuts, and etc.

These guidelines and procedures will be new to many of us as we seek to provide the best learning environment possible for all during a time of world health crisis. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work to protect the health and safety of all stakeholders. The staff at Mexia High School is fully committed to doing everything we can to ensure the best education possible in the safest environment.
