Mexia ISD Partners with Texas Education Agency to Support Student Achievement and Affirms Commitment to Campus Improvement

Mexia, Texas — On Feb 24, Mexia Independent School District (MISD) was notified that TEA was appointing an academic conservator. The conservator’s role will be focused on providing support and guidance to improve student achievement at the A.B. McBay Elementary and R.Q. Sims Intermediate School.

On March 2, 2026, MISD formally requested an informal review from TEA regarding the recent appointment in order to share documentation of the district’s ongoing corrective actions and the measurable progress already underway at A.B. McBay Elementary and R.Q. Sims Intermediate School.

The district acknowledges TEA’s continued commitment to strong systems and improved student outcomes and remains fully committed to transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Over the past several months, Mexia ISD has implemented comprehensive actions aligned to state expectations and research-based best practices.

As part of its request for review, the district submitted documentation demonstrating substantial progress and systemic improvements, including:

  • Turnaround Plans for A.B. McBay Elementary and R.Q. Sims Intermediate School

  • Targeted Improvement Plan for Mexia Junior High School

  • Ongoing partnership through TEA’s Strategic Integration Liaison (SIL) initiative to strengthen district systems,  particularly a clearly defined Professional Learning Community (PLC) framework with the implementation of a district-wide template and a thorough Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework

  • Continued implementation of Texas Strategic Leadership (TSL) work in collaboration with Region 12 Education Service Center

  • Evidence of full compliance with all required components of the Effective Schools Framework (ESF), including C.L.E.A.R. Team processes and documentation

Under the Superintendent’s direction, the district has prioritized instructional coaching, data-driven decision-making, strategic resource alignment, and targeted intervention systems. These initiatives are being implemented with fidelity and closely monitored to ensure measurable student growth.

Mexia ISD has respectfully requested that TEA consider the district’s current improvement efforts and allow the release of results from the upcoming STAAR assessment cycle prior to the implementation of any additional changes. On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Mexia ISD did informally meet with the appointed conservator. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the challenges and strategies of Mexia ISD. MISD truly believes he is sincere in helping and supporting the Mexia ISD leadership and staff in continuing the comprehensive actions in place aligned to TEA expectations and research based instructional practices. However, at this time, Mexia ISD does not know if the conservator will still be assigned. MISD remains steadfast in its commitment to working collaboratively with TEA to ensure strong outcomes for every student. The district appreciates the continued support of families, staff, and the Mexia community as it works to strengthen educational opportunities for all learners.
