Blackcats, at Mexia Junior High at approximately 10:40am, a burning smell was noticed in the girls gym. Campus administration took appropriate and immediate action to pull a fire station handle to alert the Mexia Fire Department. Students and staff were immediately evacuated outside and then taken across the street to the High School gymnasium. The fire department in conjunction with the district maintenance department quickly identified an air conditioner fan motor had overheated. The fire department has investigated and given the district clearance to return students and staff to return to campus as of 11:03am. At no point were any students or staff in danger. MISD would like to thank and commend the Mexia Fire Department and Mexia Police Department as well as campus administration and all staff for their immediate response to keep everyone safe. The district is closing the affected gymnasium until further notice and classes will resume on normal schedule for the remainder of the day.
